Who we are

The Ubomi Obutsha Foundation Netherlands (SUON) has committed to help since 2011 to the children, young people, and their families in the Kwazakhele Township in Gqeberha (Port-Elizabeth), South Africa. We believe that all children have the right to equal development opportunities. Our goal is for as many children as possible to get these opportunities with the help of the Ubomi Obutsha Centre. How we do this can be found in our policy plan “Stappen Zetten” (Taking steps) as well as our Annual Reports.

The Ubomi Obutsha Centre

The Ubomi Obutsha Centre was founded over 20 years ago by Americans Don and Judy Bixler. They responded to the needs of the children and their families in the Kwazakhele township in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Since 2005, Mark Lawler has been leading the center. Since then, the center has grown enormously.

The living conditions in the township are characterized by difficult circumstances. This makes these children vulnerable in their development. Through the programs of the Ubomi Obutsha Centre, the children and their caregivers receive help in strengthening the cohesion within the family, increasing their resilience, and developing their self-reliance. The children are supported in their social, academic, cognitive, and spiritual development. In addition, donated resources (such as food, but also care items) are distributed.
